Your name believes inSouth Dakota's Tax Problem
South Dakota has the 6th most regressive state and local tax system in the country.
The high sales and excise taxes impact the state's less affluent residents far more than the state's most affluent.
The poorest 20% of South Dakota taxpayers face the 17th highest state and local tax burden in the entire country at 11.4% share of family income
The top 1% of South Dakota taxpayers (avg income of $1,860,100) only pay 2.6% of their family income in total taxes, this is the lowest rate in the nation.
I will fight to implement a tax system that is more equitable for more South Dakotans, instead of our current system that allows the ultra wealthy to use the state as a tax haven.
This will include, but will not be limited to, a luxury tax, a wealth tax, and a corporate tax that matches our closest neighbors.
Doing this will allow us to lower property and sales tax rates while still funding all the programs we currently fund.
