South Dakota's Tax Problem

  • South Dakota has the 6th most regressive state and local tax system in the country.

  • The high sales and excise taxes impact the state's less affluent residents far more than the state's most affluent.

    • The poorest 20% of South Dakota taxpayers face the 17th highest state and local tax burden in the entire country at 11.4% share of family income

    • The top 1% of South Dakota taxpayers (avg income of $1,860,100) only pay 2.6% of their family income in total taxes, this is the lowest rate in the nation.

  • I will fight to implement a tax system that is more equitable for more South Dakotans, instead of our current system that allows the ultra wealthy to use the state as a tax haven.

    • This will include, but will not be limited to, a luxury tax, a wealth tax, and a corporate tax that matches our closest neighbors.

    • Doing this will allow us to lower property and sales tax rates while still funding all the programs we currently fund.
